New challenges – New Fears

When I qualified as a counsellor back in 2003, I didn’t envisage sitting at my kitchen table, drinking coffee, terrified, wondering how on earth I am going to write about my work and share it with you regularly. Don’t get me wrong, my work is endlessly interesting but the pressure of the flashing cursor telling me to write something you may want to read, well, that wasn’t on my radar. But here I am!

Then I got to thinking about how someone who is thinking about seeing a counsellor may feel. There is something you want to achieve; to feel better, make changes and move on with your  life. However, the reality of choosing a counsellor, making an appointment, travelling to see them and then having to share the stories of your life that you may never have shared before, well quite honestly that may seem like climbing a mountain at a point in your life when that is the last thing you want to do. I know, I have been there too!

But here’s the thing; in order to get something, we have to DO something. No matter how hard it seems, we have to trust that taking some action, however small, is better than taking no action. That each small step will bring us closer to our goal. We might not get it right, it certainly won’t be perfect (how many grammatical errors have you already spotted?) but it is a start.

Looking at this website might be your first step. Sending me a message or picking up the phone is the next. Keeping in your head the thought, ‘things have to change, I’m worth that’. You CAN move forward. Life can be very tough but you don’t have to be alone on the journey. We can work together to get where you want to be. That might be a complete change of situation or wanting to just FEEL BETTER!

So my first blog post done! It’s not perfect. I’m not completely satisfied but it is a start. Will you take your next step today? I’d love to hear from you!

Best wishes

Nicola
