So many people in today’s world are juggling lots of different roles and jobs. How many times do you think ‘I’ve only got one pair of hands’ or ‘I can only be in one place at a time’? At the end of the day do you collapse into bed feeling exhausted only to wake still not feeling refreshed? Life can feel like a hamster wheel, running and feeling like we’re getting nowhere and each day feels the same.
We often take care of those around us and put ourselves last, in fact it’s often seen as something virtuous. ‘She takes care of everyone’ ‘He always puts others first’ People are amazing and giving in so many ways but if all you do is give at some point you may well find you have nothing left.
Taking care of yourself is not only vital its sensible! If you want to keep taking care of those around you it makes sense to make sure you are in a fit state to do it. When giving the safety talk on an airplane the crew always tell you to fit your oxygen mask before trying to help others. That’s not because you are saving yourself at the expense of others but saving yourself so you can then help others.
So everyday remember to fit your mask first. Take a break, have a bath, read a book, go for a walk, do something that you enjoy. Step off the wheel for however brief a period and look around you. You are doing a great job, take care of yourself so you can keep it up.
